The Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II
The landmark 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth 2’s ascension onto the throne will be celebrated in Britain with Platinum Jubilee weekend. This national bank holiday runs from Thursday, June 2, through Sunday, June 5.
On February 6, the Queen celebrated her 70th birthday. This marks the day she assumed the throne as a 25-year-old after the death of King George VI. There have been many celebrations across the U.K. leading up to this weekend’s national holiday. A variety of public events will occur during the Jubilee, including Trooping The Colour, Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday parade, a Buckingham Palace concert featuring Queen and Diana Ross, and a closing Platinum Jubilee Pageant.
The U.K.’s BBC Studio will broadcast special live programming from the majority of events. BBC Studios also has an exclusive agreement to broadcast ABC News’s coverage. ABC News programs like “Good Morning America,” World News Tonight With David Muir, and “Nightline”, will include coverage of the Jubilee. Special editions of “Good Morning America” (daytime talk show) and “GMA3 : What You Should Know” (nighttime talk show) will be broadcast live from London, Jubilee beginning June 2. Hulu will stream several ABC programs, including the Buckingham Palace concert, next day.

Thursday, June 2
Trooping The Colour: Queen Elizabeth II will hold her annual birthday parade in Central London, for the first time since 2005’s COVID-19 pandemic. The procession will begin at Buckingham Palace, and finish at Horse Guard’s Parade. There will be hundreds of soldiers, the Irish Guards’ 1st Battalion and 240 horses, as well as over 1,200 officers representing the Queen’s Household Division. To close the event, the Queen and her family will be making a balcony appearance on the Parade grounds. (10 a.m. GMT / 2:05 a.m. PST)
Lighting the Beacons: 1500 beacons across the U.K. will be lit within minutes of the parade and in its various territories. In a special ceremony, the central beacon at Buckingham Palace will be lit. (8 p.m. GMT / 12:01 PT).
Friday, June 3
Thanksgiving Service An honoring the Queen’s reign, a service will be held at St Paul’s Cathedral. The royal family members will also be present. (9:15 GMT / 1:15 AM PT)

Platinum Jubilee pageant: This weekend will end with a pageant honoring Queen Elizabeth II. A team of performers, musicians, and military personnel will tell the story of Queen Elizabeth’s reign through four acts. The pageant will also include a “River of Hope,” which will feature 200 silk flags bearing messages from children detailing their hopes for the next 70-years. It will parade down The Mall at 1 p.m. GMT/ 5 a.m. PST
Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee begins with pomp
Thursday marked the beginning of four days of celebrations to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s 70-year tenure on the throne. There was a display of British military traditions that ranged from horse and cannon through the jet age.
The official celebrations of the Platinum Jubilee started with Trooping to the Color. This annual military review marks the sovereign’s birthday since 1760. The queen saluted on Buckingham Palace’s balcony and will be joining her working family members at the end of this event when 70 aircraft will roar overhead.
A four-day holiday weekend is being held to commemorate the jubilee. Celebrations of Elizabeth’s reign include a service at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London on Friday, and a concert at Buckingham Palace Saturday. Sunday’s pageant will be staged by thousands from communities and schools across the country.
Neighborhood organizations and individuals will host thousands of street parties across the country over the weekend. This is a continuation of a tradition that started with Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953.
The queen, 96 years old, is Britain’s longest-reigning monarch. She also became the first to reach the landmark of seven decades on throne. Many people, even those who are not often interested in the monarchy, have the opportunity to reflect on the state and major changes that took place during her reign.

John Major, a former Prime Minister and one of the 14 prime minsters of Queen Elizabeth’s reign, said that the monarch’s stoic presence helped guide the country through the decades.
He told BBC that the queen had represented our better selves for more than 70 years.
The queen thanked everyone involved in the organization of the celebrations in a written message. Many consider this the first chance to celebrate since the outbreak of coronavirus more than two years earlier.
Elizabeth stated, “I am certain that these events will create many happy memories.”
She said, “I am inspired by the kindness shown to me and hope that the next days will offer an opportunity for us to reflect on everything that has been accomplished during the past 70 years as we look forward with confidence and enthusiasm.”
World leaders sent their congratulations. French President Emmanuel Macron referred to Elizabeth as “the golden thread that binds the two countries” and one “very few constants” at the international stage.
Macron said to the queen, “You are our friend. Such a close ally. Our example of service for others.” In an English-language video message, Macron stated this to Macron.
Trooping the Color is the name of the first event on the long weekend. It refers to a regimental flag or “color” that is paraded through the ranks. Britain’s annual tradition to celebrate the Queen’s Birthday is a ceremonial reenactment that demonstrates how battle flags were used to show soldiers in order to ensure they could recognize the crucial rallying point in case of disorientation during combat.
The army’s Household Division is composed of seven regiments that perform ceremonial duties on behalf of the queen. They are soldiers with full training and can often be deployed overseas when they are not performing ceremonial duties.
Every year, a new unit is given the honor of wearing its color. During the Platinum Jubilee, the 1st Battalion Irish Guards will be the star of the show.
Many thousands of people lined the parade route, many of them camping overnight.
Carly Martin, who traveled from south London on a late-night bus with her daughter, stated that she was here “to make memories.”
She said, “You’re not going to see it again in your lifetime.” “At the very least, not in my life, and maybe not in that of my daughter.” It is all I know.
Many protesters were detained after they climbed over barriers and onto the parade route. Animal Rebellion claimed responsibility for the arrests, claiming that protesters were “demanding the reclaiming of royal land.”
Horse-drawn carriages transported members of the royal family (including Prince William’s wife Kate and their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte) from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade. This ceremonial parade was about a kilometer (0.6 mi) away.
The queen will appear twice on Buckingham Palace’s balcony, but Prince Charles was a key player during the event. He was mounted on horseback and took a salute from the ranks of scarlet-clad Guards on behalf of his mother, Princess Anne, as well as his son Prince William.
Elizabeth has struggled to get around lately, so her courtiers tried their best to make it as easy as possible.
Senior royals, including Prince Charles and Camilla, travelled in carriages to view the ceremony from a building overlooking it.
The spectacle will be watched by the Duke and Duchess, as well as other royals. Harry and Meghan traveled from California to be part of the celebrations.
