Injured CM Punk resigns of AEW just days following his victory at the the world championship
CM Punk had to step aside as AEW World Champion just days after winning it.
On Friday's All Elite Wrestling "Rampage", a red-eyed, emotional Punk stated that he was injured and would have to relinquish the title he won at Sunday’s Double or Nothing pay per view.
On June 26, a Forbidden Door pay per-view will crown an interim champion.
"The bad news is that I am injured and need surgery," Punk stated. "A few things are broken, but the most important one is my heart."
Punk, 43, won the title - his first-ever world title since 2013, beating Adam Page at Double or Nothing, Las Vegas.
Hiroshi Tanahashi, New Japan Pro Wrestling's star, was to take on him for the AEW title at their first joint pay-per view, "Forbidden Doors", at the United Center in Chicago.
Punk sees the injury as a setback from which he will recover. Punk stated that he would be willing to give up the title, but Tony Khan, AEW president, did not want him.
Punk stated that the wheels are still there and haven't been removed. It's only that one of them was broken.
Punk made his debut as Dynamite champion earlier in the week. He could be seen limping following his tag team match against Max Caster and FTR,
After seven years, Punk made his AEW debut last august.
Punk stated that the last thing I wanted was to feel like I was letting anyone down. "I never wanted to leave you feeling disappointed. I hope I haven’t let you down."
