why Twitch Streamer Pokimane Banned

Imane “Pokimane” Anys, one of the largest streamers on Twitch was barred from the site on Friday.
Pokimane’s ban was reportedly due to a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) strike resulting from the fact that she was streaming Avatar: The Last Airbender the Nickelodeon television series (thanks, Kotaku). After the live stream was cut off the social media platforms were in a frenzy and reports surfaced that said the popular live streamer was not on the streaming platform. This is the first time she has been banned on Twitch as well.
But, the ban on Pokimane isn’t a long-term one. A few hours later she announced that the ban is only for 48 hours so on Sunday night she’ll be able to log in back to her Twitch account.
According to Twitchtracker the streamer was watching and broadcasting her view of the Nickelodeon show to about 250,000 viewers in peak concurrent during the live stream. There was no direct comment from Anys about her social networks about whether the ban will be in effect. But, as of the time of writing her Twitch channel is not active. Twitch is a three-strike platform regarding DMCA claims, which means her channel is likely to be reinstated.
Anys is the face of the Twitch brand at a point when other streamers with a cult following like Ludwig Ahgren have left for YouTube. In the year 2020, the streamer has signed a multi-year agreement to remain on Twitch. Following the exclusion, Anys joked on Twitter that she was the “fire nation was attacked,” which is a reference to a famous meme from the show that she probably was banned from for her streaming.
Streamers streaming and commenting on TV is a recent fashion on Twitch. Also known by the term “TV meta” the trend has grown into a well-known method of capturing the interest of viewers. In December, well-known variety streamers such as Felix “xQc” Lengyel and Hasan “HasanAbi” Piker streamed shows from the cooking competition series MasterChef via their channel.
However, this strategy is risky as Twitch has a track record of removing content following takedown requests from corporations. in 2020, Twitch’s streaming service requested that streamers remove content to ensure compliance with the copyright laws applicable to music. Twitch responds to messages from copyright holders who have submitted DMCA requests. In this instance, ViacomCBS owns Avatar: The Last Airbender so its legal team will decide to grant the request.
A possible DMCA action against a streaming service could have massive implications for Twitch’s TV meta-trend. While Anys channel is likely to be restored however it remains to be determined if other major streaming platforms will continue to react to shows, with the threat of a possible takedown over them.
Pokimane Receives First Twitch Ban, But It’s Only Temporary
Pokimane One of Twitch’s most popular streamers with 8.5 million fans, was barred from the service on Friday night, during the streaming of the cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender. The ban is for a short period as per Pokimane’s account, however, it’s a sign Twitch’s expanding “TV Meta” is likely to create more problems for both small and large streamers.
On January 7, at about 8 p.m. at EST, Pokimane streamed to around 25,000 viewers while she was watching the Nickelodeon television series Avatar: The Last Airbender for the first time. The stream was live and featured footage of her reacting to an area of a large-screen broadcast of the show. The stream ended midway through the stream, it was reported that Pokimane was given an immediate DMCA ban that abruptly ended the stream.
After that, The StreamerBans Bot on Twitter posted the following news: Pokimane was barred from Twitch. The streamer’s first ban. Kotaku has been in contact with Pokimane regarding the ban and also if she plans to stream television shows once more.
Pokimane posted on Twitter within a couple of minutes of the ban, tweeting the following tweet “The Fire Nation attacked” an indirect reference to the Avatar show as well as the ban recently imposed. After a couple of hours, the streamer who is well-known confirmed that her ban had been temporary and that within 48 hours she will be allowed to stream again on Twitch.
